ESP8266 ESP-01 module experiments
Here is the schematic of my simple dev board:

I wanted something more than just hooking up a USB-TTL serial adapter, so I decided to use one of the PropPlugs (FT232 based) I have kicking around my lab – but in order to have partial isolation for the ESP-01 RX/TX pins I put a 470R resistor before the FTDI chip.
I used a EZasPie Proto 300 large prototyping board for the test rig. I added RESET, FLASH and USER buttons, and five LED’s to monitor TX, RX, GPIO0, GPIO2 and RESET – I used superbright LED’s with 1k current limiting resistors.
A power LED, and five male pins (from a pin header) completed the circuit.
Some male header pins so I could plug the whole board into a normal breadboard, where I used one of the handy breadboard power supplies to power the test rig.

After buzzing the circuit to make sure there were no shorts, I fired it up!

Serial terminal emulation software
I normally use one of three packages under Linux
- screen – the old standby
- minicom – more feature full, runs in a terminal
- putty – gui terminal program

You can also use the serial monitor built in to the Arduino IDE (under Tools).
